Masque of Courtly Love 9.1: A Medieval Science Fair

The Marche of Alderford is pleased to present "Masque of Courtly Love 9.1: A Medieval Science Fair" on February 18, 2006, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church in North Canton, Ohio.

Relive the fun of a Science Fair, just like when you were a kid, but now for adults, too, and now combined with the fun of these Current Middle Ages! Think up a creative project to demonstrate a principle or theory from medieval science—it needn't be "correct" by modern standards, as long as it's wrong in a period way. There will be categories for various skill levels and for different topics—and prizes for the winners!

If the Science Fair isn't your thing, have no fear. As in years past, we'll offer a whole range of activities, including:

Of course, no Masque would be complete unless we sent you home with a full belly, and so we are proud to feature a feast by our own THL Francesca de Onorati, followed by dancing to help work off all that food.

Fees

Site Fee
 Adult, pre-registered$4.00
Adult, at gate$5.00
Child ages 5~12 inclusive
Pre-reg or at gate

Main feast table, all ages, at gate$9.00
Children's feast, pre-registered or at gate$4.00
Non-Member Surcharge

Fees for site and feast are based upon the age ranges of infants 0~4 years, children 5~12 years, and adults 13 years and up.

We are offering a family discount on site fee: All adults pay full fee, but only the first two children per immediate family are charged site fee. To further assist families in making this an affordable event, we will offer a special "Children's Feast" at a reduced fee. The children's feast will be served at a separate table (but still in the main hall) and will consist of more "kid-friendly" items than the adults' period food. Children who like food from the Middle Ages are quite welcome at the main feast table, but all seats at the main tables are charged the adult fee.

Martial Activities

"Will there be fighting at Masque?" You bet! All kinds of fighting! This year we are pleased to have armoured combat, rapier combat, and youth combat.

Armoured Combat

In addition to authorizations and ample time for pick-up fighting, the Masque of Courtly Love this year will feature a Trivia Tourney organized by Sgt. Einar. With each pass through the list, combatants will receive 3 points for a win against a knight, 2 points for all others, and a loss against anyone will get you 1 point. When reporting your points to the list table, you will have the chance to score additional points by answering a general knowledge trivia question. Answering the trivia question correctly will get you an additional 2 points, incorrectly will cost you nothing. Everyone must attempt to answer a question in order for their combat points to count. Questions will be selected from general Middle Kingdom, SCA, or martial facts (i.e. "What is the name of our current Queen? What is the name of the piece of armor that covers the lower arm?").

Rapier Combat

The fencing list will be open for most of the day for tournaments and individual challenges.

Youth Combat

Young warriors should bring their armour and weaponry, as we will be offering youth/boffer combat this year.

Medieval Science Fair Rules -- Masque of Courtly Love 9.1

Attention all natural philosophers, mathematicians, students of physics, astronomers, and astrologers. We would like to invite you to attend the March of Alderford’s Masque Science Fair on February 18, 2006.

Online Science Fair Pre-Registration ]

Our vision for the Science Fair is that it resembles a traditional school science fair, with two differences: it's for adults as well as youth, and the fair includes projects based on pre-1600 CE Western and Eastern civilization.

"Science" in the Middle Ages was intricately woven into religion, philosophy, culture, and myth, and wasn't necessarily the objective fact-finding that modern science at least pretends to be, even though it sometimes falls short. For example, a period-style demonstration of some scientific "fact" or principle that is *totally wrong* would be perfectly acceptable, as long as it is totally wrong in an historically accurate way. That does not mean the particular demonstration has to be documentable to period -- what we are after is the "feel" of period science, as authentic as we can make it, but still within the broader bounds of *Creative* Anachronism.

The emphasis of the fair is to have hands-on or at least be demonstrative exhibits, but papers and treatises can be presented in-persona to achieve that same quality and to involve the audience.

Ideas for Entries

  • Natural sciences (alchemy, zoology, chemistry, physics, medicine...)
  • Mathematical sciences (astronomy, astrology, math, geometry, geography)
  • Military sciences (siege engine theory, long-distance signaling...)
  • A re-creation of mechanical drawings in the style of Leonardo da Vinci
  • A design of a perpetual motion machine that is certain to work.(ummm...)
  • A scholarly treatise, similar to the Royal Society lectures, on how the wearing of a mask with a strong herbal scent can ward off disease
  • A scale model of a new kind of siege engine to bring His Majesty's enemies to their knees
  • An intricate pen-and-ink drawing of the cosmos as known to medieval man
  • Demonstration of a lodestone, Leyden jar, or similar principle
  • Exposition upon the new Arabic mathematics, the Al Gebra
  • Demonstrating theories of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Brahe, Galen, Plato, Bacon, Aristotle, etc.
  • Designs or models of scientific instruments such as: astrolabes, water clocks, armillary spheres, equatoriums
  • A treatise defending the geocentric view of the universe
  • A treatise arguing for a heliocentric universe
  • Application of humoral theories
  • Any potential heretical thoughts related to natural philosophy

Schedule

Participants must check in by 11 a.m.
Judges' meeting 11:30 a.m. -12 p.m.
Fair runs 12-4 p.m.
Judges' scoring session 4-5 p.m.

  8. The decision of the judges is final.

If you are registering a group entry, please provide the SCA and modern name of the primary contact person or group leader at the top of the form, then list other participants in the space provided below.

The contact information on this form will only be used for the Science Fair and will not be disclosed outside the SCA without your permission.

Performances

The 2006 Masque of Courtly Love will feature numerous performances by talented artists.

This year's offerings will include:

  • "The Wife of Bath's Tale", a short play performed by the Oaken Players
  • Vocal performance during feast
  • "Street" buskers in our Market Square
  • Possibly others, depending on who shows up and wants to perform

There is a possibility of classroom reservations for small-sized "quiet" concerts (e.g. harp music) that don't lend themselves well to the larger venues. Contact our Autocrats to inquire about reserving a classroom for your concert.

The Needlers Nook

Join the Needlers Nook at the Masque of Courtly Love, Feb. 18, March of Alderford

The Needlers Nook is a space where fiber artists of all kinds can drop by to work on projects, chat, share information and just have fun making stuff.  Bring  your work in progress – weaving, embroidery, spinning, knitting, kumihimo, lucet or anything else that falls under the fiber arts. Take a peek in the  Treasure Chest -- a bin of trim, buttons, notions, yarn, etc., looking for good homes. Bring something to add to the chest, and select something to take.

The Nook will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Look for the A&S banner.

The Nook is run by Lady Jolicia atte Northclyfe (regional MOAS)  and Lady Nadzeyhda the Simple.

Dance and Ball

Music will be played by real live musicians!! There will be a "Grand Promenade" at the beginning of the Masque of Courtly Love Ball where all the masks brought for the event or made that day can be displayed. The dances will be the oldies, but goodies. If you aren't sure of the steps, there will be a class earlier in the day when the dances will be taught.

  1. Carolingian Pavane  (Belle Pavane) (The Known World Pavane)
  2. Official Bransle (Toss the Duchess) (Toss a Wench) (Bransle de l'Official)
  3. Horse's Bransle (Bransle des Chevaulx)
  4. Maltese Bransle (Bransle de Malte)
  5. Montarde Bransle (Bransle de la Montarde)
  6. Sellinger's Round
  7. Black Nag
  8. Rufty Tufty
  9. Hole in the Wall
  10. Female Sailor
  11. Strip the Willow

Armored Combat Tournament
The tournament will be a timed bear pit. The losers will get one point winners will get 3 and be allowed to stay for 3 fights. The fighter with the most points at the end will be the winner.

Rapier Tournament

Morning Tournament:
Modified Bear Pit
Each player will be given 5 tokens.
Cost to be the bear of a bearless list: 4 tokens into the pot
Challenger pays 1 token into the pot
Bear determines the fighting style
Bear and Challenger fight one pass.
Bear can then elect to split the pot (round up) with challenger (round down)
OR can finish the best of 3 whereby the winner becomes the next bear at no cost, but the pot stays put.
The Challenger that splits the pot with the Bear will be given first option to become the new bear; else next in line can become the new bear if able to pay.

Afternoon Tournament:
The Not-Your-Usual-Dice-Tournament Dice Tournament.
In every dice tournament I've seen the results of the dice determine things about the fight. Not this one. Results of the FIGHTS determine things about the DICE.
Everyone can challenge up to 10 opponents, please do not duplicate opponents.
The more you fight the better your chances.

Bardic Activites
Once again this year, the Masque of Courtly Love will feature the Minstrels' Gallery. In an intimate venue, a variety of performing artists from the region will entertain throughout the afternoon. It's a wonderful place to sit and relax for a few minutes or a few hours.

The show will also include the event challenge from our Kingdom bards, Lady Juliane and Lord Llywelyn. The challenge is open to all; details follow the schedule.

The Minstrels' Gallery performances will run continuously from 11:30 a.m. until roughly 4:30 p.m. Please join us!

10-11:30 – “You call that dancing?” Tournament

11:30-1 Lunch Break

1:30-3 – Blade Waltz Tournament

3:00 List closes

Tournament Descriptions:

“You call that dancing?” Tournament

The art and ritual of one-upsmanship.

A quick wit and some flashy clothes may get the attention of someone, but let’s really wow them with some flashy moves.

Single sword only, however your off hand must remain in contact with your hip or your head during the entire fight.

Flashy moves strongly encouraged, as this will be a judged event.

Blade Waltz Tournament

Note: Use of the term Lord and Lady for this Tournament is for the purpose of describing the rules.

Choosing to fight as either a Lord or a Lady remains each individual’s choice.

Competitors will sign up as teams and the selected gender identity will remain constant for the duration of this tournament.

A temporary suitable identifying object may be added to a competitor’s outfit where the gender role for this tournament is not clear.

Rules:

Lord and Lady A join hands, as do Lord and Lady B and such that Lords will fight left handed and Ladies will fight right handed.

A combatant that dies should attempt to immediately remove themselves from the list due to safety concerns.

The fight will continue until one of the two conditions is met.

Condition A: Exactly 1 Lord and 1 Lady are alive, regardless of which team they were initially on and will advance together as a new couple.

Condition B: Only the Lords, or the Ladies, are alive and will fight until only one survives. The winner then chooses to resurrect either their partner, or their most recently slain opponent’s partner.

Double Kills that in any way invalidate the two above conditions will be refought from the same situation that existed just prior to the double kill.

Contact the Marshal via the staff list.

ARMORED COMBAT

Double-elimination tournament for armored fighters. Bring ALL your toys...because you won't be able to use a shield for the second half of the tournament. It's time to break out of the standard tournament box, gang! Are you ready for this!?

Contact the Marshal via the staff list.

Learn a method that will save fabric, use all straight seams and look great on any shape. Handout, no fee.

The processes for various different twisted and plaited styles will be shown, as will the method to understand how to determine what style was used when a picture of the original is being viewed. The terminals and connections used in these artifacts will be shown and discussed. When the sun sets and the innocent return to their homes the streets of our fair city are not the place for the living. Rumors abound that the undead stalk stalk the night. They just might be right.

It will be run as a round robin depending on how many fighters we have signed up it may be a double round.
Only head shots are kills. All body shots are ignored and limbs can only be taken with draw cuts. Come and join in our macabre dance of death and enjoy the company.

**Bear Pit**
The Lady Acelin of the Wilds, Rapier Champion of the Middle Kingdom, will be starting off our bear pit by holding the list against all comers. I call all rapier fighters to help assist her in her Quest by facing her on the field of honor.

Masque of Courtly Love 2015: Mystery Scavenger Hunt

Masque of Courtly Love: Love Bites

Mystery Scavenger Hunt at Masque of Courtly Love

The gathering is buzzing with rumors that there’s a plot afoot that will harm the Baron and Baroness of Brendoken.

They say...

...A certain northern barony has their eyes on a southern land acquisition...

...A great Ox and a wise Owl may be impediements to the plan...

...yet the gentle and true northern neighbors have always been loyal friends to Brendoken...

Want to play and solve the mystery?

Perhaps the rumormongers have it wrong! Collect clues, and establish a story that will solve the mystery. Perhaps the goal is to trouble both Brendoken and their northern neighbors. Perhaps the Tiger seeks to seed dissension in close neighbors. Perhaps...you can come up with something equally likely!

Fifteen scavenger hunt openings are available as of 2/22. If you'd like to play, say so at the Gate, and you will be equipped with a clue sheet. Folks who pre-registered for the scavenger hunt will also get their hunt kit at the Gate

Collect all the ingredients, and come up with a story to foil the plan including all the items in your bag of ‘evidence’.

Present your finished bag to co-autocrat Rose Peregrine for approval. All participants who finish the hunt will then present their mystery solutions in court. Independent judges will choose the best scenario, and present a prize to the winner.

Kids under 10 need an adult to accompany them on the Mystery Scavenger Hunt. Team play is encouraged for every one, teams limited to two adults or two adults/two children per team.

Clues will lead participants to both people and places around Masque. It's a great game to play with new folks who are attending their first or second event. There is no time limit, participants have all day to complete the hunt. All completed kits MUST be initialed and approved by Rose Peregrine. Participants will each receive a small bag to hold the hunt items.

Items to collect

Dust that trolls covet

Two spices needed for any dish

A leaf that crowns the arts

Notes of beauty and joy

Blood from the Pelican's breast

That which holds the world together

The remainder of a slash

Copper rounds, bright as day

Paint that does not smear

Directions and Site Rules

Masque of Courtly Love is easy to find!  We're at the same site, and would ask out-of-town guests to follow the directions posted below. Yes, we know you have GPS. But it'll take you through mall traffic on a Saturday morning. Who needs that?

Grace United Methodist Church
1720 Schneider St. NW
North Canton, Ohio 44720

Directions

From north, south, or west: Take your best route to Canton, Ohio, and proceed to I-77. Exit onto US Route 62 east (the "Alliance" exit, number 107B, from I-77). Take US 62 east to the Market Avenue Exit. Go north on Market Avenue for about 1.5 miles to Schneider, and turn left (west). The church will be on your left after just a block or so.

From the east

If you approach Canton via US Route 62, simply take the Market Avenue exit and turn north, then follow the directions above from that point.
